Hi Dale, during Chinese New Year my family usually preparing melon seeds, peanuts covered with white or pink icing sugar, rice cakes and some sweets. We believed these would bring us and our New Year visitors fortune and good luck.
What drew on the washi tape are radish. Radish pronounced "tsai tou" in Taiwanese, which similar to luck. The Chinese characters 好彩頭(pronounced how tsai tou) means good luck. 好 means good, it combined by 女(means girl or daughter) and 子(means son), therefore if someone having both daughter and son we would say it's good.
